The quintessential travel companion Patek Philippe is unveiling a new self-winding grand complication that unites its exclusive Travel Time system for displaying a second time zone with a 24-hour alarm mechanism incorporating a hammer that strikes on a classic gong. To do so, the manufacture developed an entirely new integrated movement of 574 parts, registering four patents for the alarm in the process. The final result is the fruit of five years of development.
The Travel Time mechanism comprises two central hour hands, one of which (solid) is for local time and the other (skeletonized) for home time. When travelling, the owner simply presses the pusher at 8 o’clo- ck or 10 o’clock to move the local-hour hand forward or backwards in one-hour increments. Each of the two time zones has its own day/ night indicator and the date is synchronized with the local-time hour hand.
The crown at 4 o’clock enables the watch’s owner to select the de- sired alarm time in 15-minute steps in a double aperture with digital display accompanied by a day/night indicator. Much thought went into the way the system works, so as to make the alarm as practical as possible. Protection and isolation mechanisms eliminate any risk of damaging the movement through accidental mishandling. The two Travel Time pushers (with embossed + and – signs) and the pusher at 2 o’clock (adorned with a little bell) that activates or deactivates the alarm are fitted with a patented locking mechanism. The architecture and lavish finissage of the caliber AL 30-660 S C FUS self-winding movement – including its striking mechanism and a 21K gold central rotor decorated with circular Geneva striping – are visible through a sapphire-crystal case back (interchangeable with a solid platinum back).
The Alarm Travel Time Ref. 5520P-001 is housed in a sleek platinum case similar to that of the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Refs. 5524 and 7234. Its ebony-black sunburst dial features white-gold applied Ara- bic numerals and white-gold hands, both with a luminescent coating. It is worn on a black calfskin strap with clevis prong buckle reserved for the Pilot models.
